Highway 1 follows the coast for much of the length of Californias shores. This kind of dramatic coastline can be found just south of San Francisco.
Beautiful beaches like this one can be seen and visited almost during the entire Highway 1 coastal drive south to Monterrey Bay and Carmel.

Further south down the coast and just past the larger town of Monterrey is the quiet community, Pacific Grove. Coastal views and walks are great at Pacific Grove.

Carmel is a very quaint, small, beach-side town with just a couple main roads lined with cafes and shops in old homes like this one.
Everything in Carmel has a fairy-tale like quality to it from the wooden roof shingles to the curve in the roofline.
Carmels beach is also a fantastic white sand beach.
Carmel is also known for its great little cottage-style homes built on heavily wooded lanes. Instead of addresses, Carmels homes are known by home names given by the owners.
